If you are a smoker, having a smoker’s cough is likely something you deal with every day. It is merely a sign that your body is attempting to rid itself of toxins from the smoke and heal. Regardless of what we do to our bodies, they always try to fix themselves. This is why you don’t want to suppress the cough using medicines.
Of course, quitting smoking is the only true way to stop your smoker’s cough. There are a few things you can do, though, to help your body in the healing process and relieve some of the irritations that come with the cough.
- Drink plenty of water: Water benefits us all with all kinds of health conditions, from losing weight to dealing with allergies. Well, here’s another reason to drink more water – it helps to thin the mucus from your throat and lungs to make your cough more productive. You can help your irritated throat by gargling with warm salt water too.
- Use honey: Take a teaspoon of honey directly or add it in your tea to help soothe your irritated throat.
- Use a throat lozenge: You can use pretty much any kind of lozenge. A regular cough drop can be useful in helping your throat irritation and reduce the coughing. You can also use a Vitamin C lozenge, though, to give you some relief. That way, not only do you soothe your throat, but you boost your immune system with the added vitamins.
- Use essential oils: Place a humidifier in your room and add some eucalyptus oil in it. These oils will help you to breathe easier and break up the mucus in your lungs and throat.
- Elevate your head to sleep: Use a pillow to prop your head up when you sleep. This will help to reduce the drainage of mucus in your throat and help you not to cough as much. You will wake up feeling more refreshed and less mucus.
- Eat healthy foods and exercise: This is important for everyone, not just people with smoker’s cough. Smoking doesn’t give you the free pass to give up on staying healthy in other ways.
Though these steps will help you deal with smoker’s cough, they will not stop it completely. The only way to truly stop it is to stop smoking and give your lungs time to heal.
